Asbestos

Asbestos is a collective name for a number of minerals (silicates) that occur naturally and are composed of fine, microscopic fibers. In the past, asbestos was mainly used as a building material, and this has left its mark. Not only buildings constructed before 1994 may contain asbestos—it can also be present in the soil. If too many asbestos fibers are released, this can be harmful to health. That is why the use of asbestos has been prohibited in the Netherlands since 1993.
